USD billions

Dubai external trade’s highest value goods in 2023.

Dubai’s prominent status in the global jewellery industry is highlighted by its historical pearling traditions and the iconic Gold Souk.
Today, Dubai is a major international diamond trading hub, with the diamond trade reaching USD 38.3 billion in 2023, up 2% year-on-year and representing a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11%, according to the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC). This figure underscores Dubai's importance in both rough and polished diamond markets.

The polished diamond trade rose 32% year-on-year to USD 16.9 billion, consolidating the UAE’s status as the world’s leading diamond trade hub for rough and polished diamonds. The UAE remains the largest trade hub for rough diamonds, with USD 21.3 billion worth of rough diamonds traded in 2023. Additionally, the value of lab-grown diamonds traded in the UAE increased by 10% year-on-year, reaching USD 1.6 billion.

In the first half of 2023, Dubai’s non-oil trade achieved approximately USD 327 billion, with gold, diamonds, and jewellery being top commodities valued at USD 38 billion, representing 25% of the total trade value.

Consumption Accelerator

CONSUMPTION ACCELERATORS

Purchasing

Consumers have been opening-up to the prospect of purchasing jewellery online in recent years, with the share of online sales across the US and Western Europe doubling between 2018 and 2019 (Gartner L2). While digital technology is making it easier for customers to appreciate the choice and quality that brands have to offer, the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) have recognised a subsequent desire for appointment-only business transactions, even amidst the pandemic.

Perspectives

While US Spring lockdowns in 2020 led to inevitable jewellery sales shortfalls, Summer sales for the period rebounded spectacularly, generating $1 billion growth year on year (The New York Times.) Engagement rings, jewellery upgrades and a timely trend towards self-gifting have all been reported as drivers of the boom – as consumers put greater importance on celebrating “the moment”.

Priorities

As consumers sought to “offset the sense of unease” that pervaded 2020, the industry witnessed a move towards more minimalist, timeless jewellery styles that typify ‘rational’ investment pieces. In 2021, Global Corporate Marketing at Platinum Guild International (PGI) foresees sees bolder, more assertive and adventurous designs leading the style charge as consumers embrace the opportunity to (finally) dress up and stand out. With this decade already being described as the “new roaring twenties”, it is anticipated that safe seasonal trends and run-of-the-mill cycles are set to be upended in their tracks.

TRADE ACCELERATORS

Consolidation

Key markets like China have seen jewellers with weak brand value and/or cash flows eradicated, putting the industry in an overall healthier position (World Gold Council). Jewellery sales in China recorded a 93.4 per cent year on year increase in the first quarter of 2021, surpassing catering and automobile to rank as the number one selling consumer goods segment for the period. (National Bureau of Statistics of China).

Competition

BIG BRANDS
Keen to capture one of the fastest growing categories in luxury consumer goods, high-end apparel players can be seen introducing or expanding their jewellery collections, with Giorgio Armani Privé, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermès and Gucci all debuting their first high jewellery collections as recently as 2019. Highlighting the huge cross-category marketing potential that jewellery has to offer, Chanel and Louis Vuitton recently utilized statement jewellery lines to depict their iconic handbag motifs on the Spring 2021 catwalk. (Harpers Bazarre).

INDEPENDENT BRANDS
Indie companies willing and able to quickly adapt to digital platforms experienced as much as triple digit growth during the pandemic; including independent labels Gorjana and Kendra Scott as reported by Forbes.

Creativity

BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY
The jewellery industry is known for its reliance on direct interaction, and despite a gradual increase in digital sales in recent years, up to 90% of jewellery retailers still do not have an online presence [MarketOrders 2020 ] With high-value commodities literally ‘passing hands’ this traditional supply chain is known to be time consuming and difficult to track.

In the second half of 2020, Online B2B marketplace MarketOrders announced that it will soon be introducing a revolutionary form of blockchain technology aimed at increasing transparency (not to mention profit margins) across the industry. The digitization “enables independent jewellery retailers to source products quickly and cost-effectively directly from global manufacturers, cutting the time it takes to get products delivered from weeks and months to days.”
Ensuring airtight accountability, this global ledger will also support the industry’s move towards sustainable and ethical materials and processes that are aligned with the values of today’s more mindful consumers. With blockchain already being used to validate the provenance and increase the value of luxury items like diamonds, this progress signals a more conscious future ahead for the industry at large.

VIRTUAL MEETINGS
In order to minimise delays caused by travel restrictions and social distancing, Alrosa (who lead the world in diamond mining by volume) stepped up the use of their online rough trading platform that launched in 2019. The Sarine Technologies scanning software evaluates the polished output and overall profitability of physical rough diamonds, enabling online buyers to collaborate virtually with external teams and factories without ever being physically present.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
IBM, Google and Microsoft are supporting the Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI) who commenced a 2021 pilot project studying the application of artificial intelligence in jewellery casting. Beyond design, the technology is already being earmarked for use right across the supply chain with the aim of regulating gold quality, enhancing sales techniques, improving hit ratios and personalising customer services.

Market overview

MARKET OVERVIEW

Global performance

Despite serious economic disruption at the turn of 2020, the global gems and jewellery market is forecast to grow at 5.5% CAGR by 2025*. Though shy of pre-pandemic projections at 8% CAGR** this outlook represents a significant hike from approximately 230 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 to roughly 292 billion dollars by 2025***.

* (Forecast made post-pandemic in 2020 by Mordor Intelligence.)
** (Grand View Research, June 2019)
*** (Satista, Feb 2021)

Regional Performance

In the Gulf region, jewellery trade benefitted from a re-bound in the second half of 2020 spurred by local customers, especially in Saudi Arabia with the return of weddings, investment buying and the launch of new collections. Jewellery was the only luxury category to achieve value growth in 2020. [Bain & Company]

Saudi Arabia, the Arab world’s largest economy, will remain the biggest driver of growth for the regional luxury industry in the coming years due to population growth, new tastes and preferences, and the emergence of new luxury consumers, such as affluent working women. [Bain & Company]

Jewellery Trade in Dubai

Dubai’s exceptional stature in the global jewellery industry is perhaps best represented by two unique aspects in its history – its pearling traditions and its world-renowned Gold Souk (marketplace or bazaar). Today, Dubai is also known as an international diamond trading hub, with trade rising more than six folds from AED 13.2 billion (US$3.6 billion) in 2003 to AED 84 billion (US$23 billion) in 2019, according to Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).

During 2020, Dubai’s non-oil trade (exports and imports) showed resilience despite the pandemic. Gold, diamonds and jewellery continued to top the list of non-oil trade commodities.
