International pearl group launched

The global pearl industry has taken a significant step towards collective growth with the establishment of the Global Pearl Development Community (GPC).

A non-governmental organisation, GPC brings together companies, trade associations and industry representatives across pearl-producing regions worldwide, spanning both saltwater and freshwater pearl sectors.

Industry veteran Robert Wan of Tahiti Perles was elected first president of GPC alongside a line-up of vice presidents and members representing major pearl production hubs.

Named vice presidents were Wong Tat Wah of Yee On (Group) Ltd, Hong Kong, China; Rosario Autore of Autore Pearls Pty Ltd, Australia; Peter Bracher of Paspaley Pearling Company, Australia; Zhan Weijian of Grace Pearl (HK) Co Ltd; Zhou Shuo of Hainan GN Pearl Technology Inc, China; Francesco Bruno of PT Autore Pearl Culture, Indonesia; Hiroki Goto of Japan Pearl Promotion Society, Japan; Si Thu of Myanmar Atlantic Co Ltd, Myanmar; and Jacques Christophe Branellec of Jewelmer, Philippines.

According to Arthur Wong, secretary general of GPC and president of Hong Kong-based Fukui Shell Nucleus Factory Ltd, GPC aims to foster international collaboration across the value chain, focusing on standardisation, sustainability and pearl quality, with a vision of reinforcing the industry’s resilience and global competitiveness.

“GPC was jointly initiated by organisations and enterprises within the pearl and jewellery trade. It stands as the first international organisation in the pearl sector with broad representation and specialised expertise,” said Wong. “Through the unity of pearl farms and companies worldwide, we hope to drive growth in the pearl industry.”

GPC will consolidate resources across the global pearl trade, proactively fostering collaboration among member organisations in areas such as technological innovation, ethical practices, brand promotion and sustainable development.

At its inaugural general assembly in Hong Kong on September 19, 2025, GPC celebrated its official launch with over 50 representatives from leading pearl enterprises and relevant organisations, including the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC), Japan Pearl Promotion Society (JPPS), The Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), Tahitian Pearl Association Hong Kong (TPAHK), Hong Kong Pearl Association (HKPA) and Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association (HKJMA), among others.

Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, noted the significance and positive impact of establishing GPC, adding that he is anticipating collaboration with GPC to elevate the industry to greater heights.
