Gemfields’ emerald sale raises US$26M

Gemfields’ emerald sale raises US$26M

Gemfields’ latest auction of higher-quality rough emeralds achieved revenues of US$26.8 million, demonstrating strong pricing and competition for top-tier gems.

According to Gemfields, 36 of the 37 lots offered were sold, totalling 183,385 carats while average realised price was US$146.08 per carat. The sale was held in early May.
Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ managing director of Product & Sales, commented, “This auction result demonstrates that, while demand for higher-quality emeralds remains stable, the market is presently exercising a degree of caution, influenced by ongoing geopolitical tensions and prevailing macroeconomic uncertainty.”

Competition and pricing for premium emeralds, however, remained particularly strong, reflecting the rarity and continued desirability of exceptional gems, added Banks.

The depreciating Indian rupee against the US dollar since the previous high-quality auction in September 2025 also created headwinds for many customers.

The rough emeralds sold at auction were extracted by Kagem, where Gemfields has a 75 per cent stake. The remaining 25 per cent is held by the Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia.
